“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
The studio is closed to honor Martin Luther King Day. It is up to each and every one of us to stamp out white supremacy and racism. I know this may take generations, but let’s start now. If you think this is not on your doorstep, not your cause, think again. Every hate crime matters. Police brutality matters. Every toxic slur matters. A confederate flag wielded in the Capitol matters. This is not about which party you identify with—this is about rejecting contempt for your fellow woman or man. This is about rejecting centuries of systemic racism in favor of inclusion and respect. I didn’t earn much of what I have just by stint of being white. I took, and still take, so much for granted. I moved through life without the threats that haunt anyone of color in our country. Put your pocketbook to work to invest in businesses that are inclusive. Non-profits that embrace diversity on both their board and in their staff. Ask questions. Push against entitlement. Make sure your kids’ schools are reading James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes at the very least. These should be required reading. It starts with education.

One of my guilty pleasures is studying anyone else’s list of favorite things. No glossy has asked me for my top ten but no matter. Here are some of mine: our tote bags, our masks, my @shinola watch, which reduces the amount of time I look at my phone, the fabulous John Robshaw Prints, the Earth in Her Hands, my grandfather’s magnifying glass, my vegan hummingbird wallet, my water bottle, my favorite @tombowusa pens and my @isabey_brushes watercolor brush.

We couldn’t resist jumping on the #nationaldressupyourpetday bandwagon. It’s amazing how easily we can amuse ourselves — and the studio dogs got paid in treats. WIN-WIN!!

Our local bears are hibernating except for the one that lives in the studio. I couldn’t resist painting a version of our local bear this summer and he swiftly lumbered onto some of our products. Swipe left to see and tap for details.
