Mapping Pi

$10,900.00 USD

An original watercolor, where each number (0-9) is assigned a different shade, and painted 3.1415926...and so on. This aims to demonstrate the incredible lengths of irrationality, even showing that colorful patterns can emerge from randomness. 2018.

42" x 56"

Original watercolor on watercolor paper, framed.

When Catto’s young daughter became captivated by the scope of this transcendental number, pi, and the concept of irrationality, Catto decided to explore the concept of infinity on her own terms. She assigned each number (0-9) to a different shade of color and painted the sequence starting with 3.1415926 on up. Catto recognized that patterns are embedded in seemingly “random” sequences, and she continues to explore this dynamic in subsequent paintings.
