When I was nine a family friend gave me The Nothing Book. I carried it everywhere and this habit became permanent — I am never without my journal. My sketchbooks hold my brain: the galumphing to-do list, jottings, inspiration, places to visit, music to listen to, books to read, movies to see, endless doodles, potential painting titles, dreams and schemes, kids appointments, my calendar, and the rest of the beat.
A 2019 New York Times article on global avian decline inspired Isa to paint a series of endangered bird portraits to raise awareness of vulnerable birds. The California Condor is the third in the series and inspired this notebook. The Big Sur Condor Sanctuary was destroyed in the Dolan Fire during the Summer 2020 and we encourage you to visit VentanaWS.org to learn more about these huge new world vultures and how we can all help rebuild this important facility.
