After reading about the global catastrophic decline in avian species last year, I started to sketch and research birds to increase my connection and knowledge. This is the California Condor or Gymnogyps californianus, whose population was severely reduced over the last century. Lead poisoning and shooting depleted the condor population to 22 individuals, but it has since increased to 312 condors in the wild and 173 individuals in captivity. To read more about how this bird has inspired my designs, check out this blog post.
Please visit Ventana Wildlife Society’s website to learn more about these incredible bird’s plight, and how the recent wildfires in California have affected their restoration. Auction proceeds go to VWS’s rebuild of their Big Sur Condor Sanctuary.
