May you head into a lovely Memorial Day weekend. I will be puttering happily at home planting the last of the garden and welcoming the first round of house guests. It feels like summer, cool temperatures aside. And studio visits have resumed so go to link in bio to make your appointment.

As I push through this daily color exploration I sometimes overlook the subtler palettes. This was Mother’s Day at dawn — filtered sunlight through the cloud cover. And yes there were hints of earthy olive green tucked into the clouds.

Headed home after a splendid six days in Madrid where my eldest (otherwise known as our green-eyed Fi) has been studying. I fell in love with the easy pace of the city and the cafe lifestyle. Here are some takeaways:
1. No one seemed rushed and people were so friendly despite my less than perfect Spanish.
2. People were not staring at their phones except for tourists navigating the terrain. Instead, people gathered to chat at every opportunity in the infinite plazas.
3. Busyness does not mean relevance. Opposite from the American custom.
4. There is something lovely about a dog loving city with dogs tucked under a cafe table.
5. No need to worry about public shootings.
6. Meandering is an art form.
7. The museums are sublime.
8. The parks and botanical gardens were top notch.
9. There were flowers everywhere — on clothing, on walls, in window boxes and in the green spaces.
10. Inspiration everywhere. I am coming back.

Snow again. But the daffodils persevere even when the snow flattens them into a new formation. When I was younger, I kept daily journals, most rather painful to read now. But sometimes I find the insight tucked in between self-absorbed ramblings and am reminded of the importance of a daily attention to detail and how the most banal observation can lead to revelation. I feel that way about this daily color exploration. As we move into a very late spring, I understand how much I missed certain colors —that yellow that feels like a jolt of electricity or the greens that make you feel younger. When I was a kid I used to love capture the flag and felt the triumph when I latched onto home base and into safety. This practice of journaling the daily colors is doing the same thing — giving me that adrenaline boost of arriving home.

Yesterday’s Earth Day celebration. Yes, yes the snow lingers, but with any luck we will have a summer without fire. And it is our husky/malamute Rose's favorite kind of weather! As for Earth Day — it’s a good prompt that each and every individual needs to be an advocate for this planet — whether it’s picking up trash or dedicating your life to science and research or making better consumer choices. My small studio tries to be as sustainable as possible by making small batches of products, many in house, but we can always do better. We all can. #happyearthday
