It’s October, and, believe it or not, it’s time to think about……the holidays. Yikes. Here is a WIP of our new holiday tote bag. The design inspiration came from a tile pattern I sketched at the Met. The original version used wavy lines in the background, so I used that element and dropped floral imagery (delphinium and antique roses from @themojogardens) throughout the composition. I wanted to execute a design that didn’t scream traditional holiday. But it is green! Tissue and wrapping paper come next.

For years I used to teach watercolor, and arriving at the right color was by far the most stressful part for my students. Most of them didn’t want to mix colors and preferred to squeeze them right out of the tube. Others never pushed beyond formal color theory into the actual practice of making their own colors and got tangled up with overthinking their approach. These are my new color field paintings designed to show how nuanced the primary, secondary and tertiary colors can be. Fall hiking season is here, so be prepared. I have noticed that people are hiking in the high country with fewer clothes (hot pants and exercise bras are not the wisest choices – that bluebird sky can vanish in minutes), treadless shoes like sandals, not enough water, and fewer backpacks. Here is what I bring with me on each and every high country hike: ⁠

We headed to the hills for my husband’s birthday. Getting to the high country, and into the wilderness, is always a reset and reminds me of my very humble place in the order of things. It was very windy at the summit, but I managed to keep my indispensable hat on!⁠
