about the collection

We all share anxiety over belonging to our communities, to our friends, to our families and to the world at large. I vanquish my own feelings of alienation by traveling. Stepping away from my hearth forces me off my axis, out of my own perspective and into inspiration. My geography collection is pulled from sketchbooks, journals, and photographs.

In 1999 I took a trip to Morocco. The textures, the colors, the bustle, and the desert were constant sources of inspiration. These patterns were inspired by colorful striped bowls in the Marrakesh souk. During the trip, I made numerous line paintings in response to the famous plein air market.

If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody.
