ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS

Watercolor is Isa Catto’s preferred medium because of how it conveys the complexity of color, providing depth and texture to each piece. After Catto developed an allergy to linseed oil, she turned to watercolor — and never looked back. Catto’s conceptual and abstract works on paper push watercolor out of its hobbyist stereotype and into a substantive medium.

COLOR THEORY

When Catto’s children were small, she didn’t have much time to sketch or paint during family travels. Instead, she took notes on color. She filled her small sketchbook with the names of colors she saw — everything from laundry lines to bird plumage, to posters on a wall, to flowers in a tiny garden — then translated these notes into color studies after the kids were in bed. This method turned into a valuable tool that increased her color literacy. We all register places differently, and Catto’s first response to her environment is to register color. Catto’s mixed-media panels have a compositional approach that is very different from that of her paintings. She looks for intersections in her private and public lives as a mother, a woman, an artist, a writer, a gardener and a citizen in her local community and at large. Catto’s creative process is inspired by the rhythm, the chaos and the considerations of her life — and by poetry, literature and, especially, the natural world.

Isa Catto Studio offers a wide range of prints from selected paintings and mixed media. We work with a fine-art digital printmaking specializing in the production of limited-edition prints. The digital nature provides an unprecedented amount of control, ensuring that every print accurately and faithfully represents the artist’s vision. Each print is produced one at a time by hand and goes through a careful curation process before leaving the studio. In addition to the pride and craftsmanship that go into the production of these prints, at every step of the process, the highest-quality, most-permanent and most-archival materials are utilized. The use of these top-quality materials ensures that the prints will last a lifetime, with no degradation to color or to substrate.
